Fracture Mechanics Specialist
Department The Analytical Technology & Materials Characterization team in Bergen op Zoom is part of the Sabic Technology and Innovation Organisation. The AT&MC team (~45 fte) is providing a broad range of laboratory services to support product development programs. Laboratory capabilities include labscale extrusion, part molding, physical testing and chemical characterization. The Polymer Physics laboratory is well equipped with an extensive array of advanced mechanical, thermal and rheological characterization techniques. To strengthen our polymer physics team, we are currently looking for a Fracture Mechanics Specialist. The Challenge As a member of the Global Analytical Technology team, the successful candidate will: Develop and implement experimental techniques to study deformation and fracture of engineering thermoplastics, polyolefins, and composites. Employ advanced mechanical testing tools to establish the relation between the stress intensity and the crack propagation rate, K and J toughness parameters and develop structure-property relationships for polymer materials. Participate in product and process development programs: plan and implement testing programs, data analysis and provide guidance for studies in material toughness. Provide consultation, technical expertise and trouble shooting support to Technology, Manufacturing and Commercial teams. Build and utilize external contacts with universities, expert groups and equipment suppliers. Your Profile Ph.D. in Materials/Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline. Strong R&D track record and several years of professional experience are desired. In-depth technical expertise of continuum mechanics, fracture mechanics, fatigue, environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) of polymers and composites. Successful candidate will be an expert on understanding of crack growth behavior in materials and solving complex fracture problems. Broad knowledge of polymer processing and polymer characterization techniques is desired. The position requires excellent written and oral communication skills. The applicant should demonstrate the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously. The ability to work in cross-functional and global teams is a must.
